Landscaping marketing calendar for the Charlotte area

A month-by-month plan for Charlotte, Mooresville and Statesville landscapers, matched to what NC State Extension says lawns and plants are doing.

A post about crabgrass prevention fits February. In July it is out of place. Landscaping marketing is easier when your message matches what the lawn is doing that month.

This calendar follows NC State Extension's lawn calendars for tall fescue, bermudagrass and zoysiagrass (tall fescue, bermudagrass, zoysiagrass). NC State tells owners to adjust dates to the lawn's location, soil and age, so treat each month as a starting point.

NC State's freeze table lists an average last spring freeze of April 1 and first fall freeze of November 5 at Charlotte Douglas Airport. For Statesville, the dates are April 16 and October 25. It has no Mooresville station, so use whichever of the two is closer to your jobs (NC State Extension).

January

Leaves come off the lawn through winter. NC State says clearing them from bermudagrass leads to earlier, more even spring green-up.

Your move: call past customers and open your spring schedule. Update your photos and service pages while crews have time.

February

Tall fescue gets its late-winter feeding. Crabgrass germinates when the soil averages about 55°F for 3 or 4 days. As of 2024, an NC State weed specialist reported finding crabgrass germinating in February in 4 of the last 5 years and recommended applying pre-emergent earlier (TurfFiles).

Your move: post "Book your pre-emergent now," and say why it can't wait.

March

NC State says pre-emergent for tall fescue is typically best in early March, sooner in the Piedmont. For bermudagrass the window is mid-February to early March.

Your move: sell spring cleanup and mulch. Hold tender plantings until after your area's last freeze date.

April

Warm-season lawns green up. Mow bermudagrass when it first turns green, and feed it several weeks after it is fully green, typically early April to May. Zoysiagrass gets its first feeding about three weeks after green-up.

Your move: post a green-up checklist with your own photos, and book plantings.

May

NC State says to treat broadleaf weeds in bermudagrass in May. In late May, dethatch if thatch is thicker than half an inch, and start replanting bare spots with sod or sprigs.

Your move: show a before and after of a dethatched or resodded lawn.

June

Preventive white grub treatments can go on in June. Bermudagrass is fed every four to six weeks through summer.

Your move: send a summer care reminder to customers who agreed to hear from you.

July

Brown patch hits tall fescue in humid weather above 85°F. NC State advises watering between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. and keeping the mowing height above 3 inches.

Your move: post a short guide to what brown patch looks like, with photos from lawns you have worked on.

August

NC State says to delay tall fescue aeration until fall. The overseeding window for the Piedmont opens September 1.

Your move: book fall aeration and overseeding now, so September is already full.

September

Piedmont tall fescue overseeding runs September 1 to October 1. NC State's basic feeding plan calls for 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet in mid-September.

Your move: push fall fescue work. Post finished overseeding photos and tell customers to keep the seedbed moist.

October

For tall fescue lawns, NC State says to aerate in fall if the lawn gets heavy traffic or sits on clay soil. Bermuda and zoysia lawns follow their own calendars. Fall is also a good time to plant trees and shrubs, because roots get established before the summer heat (NC Cooperative Extension).

Your move: book tree and shrub plantings and leaf cleanups.

November

Tall fescue gets its second feeding, about the time the grass is green but not actively growing. The first freeze arrives in Statesville around October 25 and in Charlotte around November 5, on average.

Your move: sell leaf cleanup and ask customers for reviews while fall work is fresh in their minds.

December

Mow tall fescue to 3 inches and keep leaves off the lawn.

Your move: use the quieter month to thank every customer and ask each one for a Google review. Don't offer gifts or discounts for it, and don't ask only the happy ones (Google).
